Biogas Plant Working

Biogas Production.

Bio gas is produced in the absence of oxygen, so you need to make the plant air tight. Biogas is produced by anaerobic bacteria. This anaerobic bacteria is present in animal excretions. Commonly used material for the working of biogas plant is cow dung which is easily available. That’s why we need to put cow dung in our biogas plant to start its working. The organic waste which we are putting into the plant is fermented by this anaerobic bacteria producing methane gas. This process is called anaerobic digestion or fermentation This methane gas combines with carbon dioxide and becomes biogas which will burn.

Waste which we can put into biogas plant.

Vegetables, kitchen waste, animal and birds excretion especially cow dung, fish and meat waste, waste water after washing rice meat fish etc and any degradable organic waste can be put into bio gas plant.

Waste which we should not put into biogas plant.

Metal, plastic, leaves (which will decay slowly) soap, chemicals, lemon and pineapple (which are acidic) should not be put into the biogas plant.

Benefits of a portable biogas plant

1. Space required for placing a plant is only one square meter.

2. It will help not only in waste management; we get gas required for cooking.

3. Amount of gas produced can be calculated by seeing the level of the gas collection chamber.

Things which we should take care.

  1. Consider the capacity of the tank while putting waste materials. If you put more amount of waste than the capacity of the tank, it will lead to produce a bad smell around the tank.
  2. Collected waste water from the tank has to be removed daily. This can be used as manure for plants.
  3. There is a possibility that mosquitoes and flies will lay eggs in the small gap between the gas collection tank and the slurry tank. To avoid this pour a small amount of kerosene into that gap.
  4. Methane gas which is produced in the plant is many times dangerous than carbon dioxide so you have to be careful in handling the gas. Biogas Stove should not be kept open. This gas will cause health problems.
  5. Place the biogas plant as much as near to the kitchen, which will help you in increasing the gas pressure.
  6. Plant some garden plants near the plant.
